How can we change up the mood of student engagement in reading, writing, and discourse? A change in tone during close reading (using different expression and tone prompts), formative assessment using skits and miming, or a full blown Ted Talk project collaborating with other content areas? This session will expose teachers to tools and activities they might use to trick students into academic discourse and liven up lessons. Session will cumulate with a “recipe swap” for where teachers will have an opportunity to swap strategies they use to engage students in in reading, writing and discourse. Session will be facilitated by a high school social studies teacher; but strategies are appropriate for other content areas where reading, writing, and student discourse are essential. Bring a strategy to share and laptop if you want to be involved in the digital recipe swap.
